When we started working with Huawei in 2007, the company was primarily known as a telecommunications equipment supplier and had yet to establish itself as a consumer brand. Its internal design organisation was still relatively small, while design was becoming increasingly important to Huawei’s global ambitions.
As one of several international design partners, we worked closely with Huawei’s growing design teams to bring new perspectives, methods and user-centred thinking into product development. Research, workshops and joint projects became opportunities not only to develop new solutions, but to exchange experience and build design capabilities together. At times, Huawei designers joined our team in Hamburg, working directly with us on projects.
Our collaboration covered more than 30 projects across both professional and consumer markets — from server racks, radio cells, antennas and network products to routers, desktop phones and set-top boxes. Alongside individual products, we developed a comprehensive design language for Huawei’s B2B portfolio, creating greater coherence and recognition across very different types of equipment.
Working across Huawei teams in China, Europe and Germany gave us the opportunity to accompany the company through an important period of change. Our contribution was one part of a much larger transformation — helping strengthen the role of user needs, design and brand within an organisation traditionally driven by technology and engineering.
