Photonic

The Future of Computing

Product Design, Strategy, Consulting

Due to their unprecedented processing power quantum computers have the potential to change the world.

Photonic Inc. from Vancouver/Canada is at the forefront of turning the complex science of quantum mechanics into practical, accessible computational power – and they approached us to help them develop their very first product.

It is an exciting endeavour to work with a highly dynamic and ambitious start-up in a product category where reference products are scarce.

Our task was to understand technical requirements, functional requirements and stakeholder expectations and develop the convincing design solution, that addresses all needs – and that eventually adds that bit of iconic magic to the product.

A start-up meeting at the headquarter and labs in Vancouver helped to deeply understand people, technology and expectations first-hand and built the foundation for all future communication with Photonic.

In several ideation loops – including the development of scale mockups and full-size door segments – the final solution evolved: a design idea aiming to express a unified and calm yet confident character, bridging world-changing technology with the demands of accessibility and modularity of a system designed to scale.

The modularity of System 1 is embodied in its grid-based layout, which ensures scalability in system configurations while relying on a minimal number of standardized components of metal, glass, and LED panels.

All internal components are easily accessible through the multiple doors, thus allowing easy installation and maintenance. System 1’s size and layout meet standard datacenter requirements and support flexible customization for various layouts and system configurations.

System status can be monitored remotely via the management interface or displayed in real time through the large dashboard on the display cube.

A unique aspect of System 1 is its iconic three-sided display cube at the front. It serves as the dashboard and as a canvas expressing the brand and the quantum computing process.
